CPT Codes for Massage Therapists
Based upon the Scope of Practice defined for massage therapy by the Montana Board of Massage Therapy, a licensed* Massage Therapist may bill the following codes:
- 97124 – Massage, including effleurage, petrissage and /or tapotement (stroking, compression, percussion) each 15 minutes (each 15 minutes = 1 unit). No more than three 15-minute units in one day can be billed without prior authorization. Time must be documented in the note.
- 97010 – Application of a modality to one or more areas; hot/cold packs.
Time spent providing massage needs to be documented in the record. 97010 does not have a time element attached to it and may be billed only once (one unit of service) regardless of the number of areas applied.
*MSF requires current licensure for massage therapists providing services for MSF injured workers. In addition, they must also apply for an NPI number through NPPES in order to submit a bill for payment.
