Slips, Trips, and Falls: Stairs

Proper stair design and housekeeping can keep stairs free from hazards.

  • Handrails installed 30 to 37 inches above the leading edge of stair treads.
  • Clearance behind hand rails for hand grip.
  • Treads must be evenly spaced.
  • Stairways with four or more steps, or that rise more than 30 inches in height.
  • Do not allow stairs to become cluttered with obstacles.
